"One reason is that successful people can get high on their supply, mistaking luck for skill and becoming overconfident."
Another reason is that the same intelligence which helps successful people to be successful can help them find ingenious and novel excuses for doing something inadvisable. This is independent of the degree of overconfidence which the intelligent person has.
Slot is a good comparison with Starmer. A thumping initial victory and very swiftly turning into a figure who attracts visceral hatred. Not entirely fairly in either case but in both cases the man's comms are making things worse.
One remark undermines the credibility of this entire piece. Arne Slot a failure? He won the sodding league first time out (and don’t say it was Klopp’s team - if Jurgen thought he had a title winning side for 2024-5 he wouldn’t have quit, he’s not daft). So check your stuff before publishing and, by the way, what team do you follow? Must have a fantastic coach if that’s your idea of failure.
An excellent analysis. I keep asking myself why we end up with such dismal politicians in high office. I am quite sure that the great figures of my youth were far more impressive individuals. They had all sorts of political crises, but somehow they seemed more understandable, and less the consequence of personal failings. What has changed to cause a decline in the calibre of people?

Give us an example of a higher calibre figure. Because the argument of this piece, there is no such thing as calibres anyway.
